Caring for Your Urban Orchard: A Hands-on Class on Fruit Tree Management

Do you want to get the most out of your yard? Are you thinking of adding fruit trees, or do you want to take better care of the ones you have? This class is for you!

This full-day workshop will offer a comprehensive look at caring for your backyard orchard. Participants will learn basic tree identification, nursery specimen selection, desirable structure for mature trees, how to train young trees, pruning techniques, when in the year to prune each species, and how to diagnose and treat the most common conditions affecting orchards. Integrated pest management strategies will be covered, with a focus on preserving beneficial insects.

We’ll evaluate tree placement in the yard and discuss strategies for effective irrigation and fertilization. Participants are encouraged to come with pictures of their trees or drawings of their yards as examples to analyze. A large portion of the day will be hands-on practice doing structural pruning on fruit trees. Species discussed may include apples, plums, citrus, olive, pomegranate, fig, apricot, persimmon and almond.

Please bring hand pruners and a wood saw if available; instructor has extras if necessary.

This class is taught by Molly Bolt, a licensed arborist and certified horticulturist. She has a pruning business that focuses on orchard management and has worked as a landscaper, nursery manager and soil nutrition instructor. She believes that one key to sustainability is local food security and wants to help people turn their backyards into kitchen gardens. Many of her trimmings are fed to her dairy goats.

This class will meet from 10am-4pm in Napa
Two sessions available: Saturday March 6, 2010 and Saturday March 20, 2010.

Class size is limited to ensure personal attention.

Cost per attendee is $30-60, sliding scale.
Registration is handled ahead of the workshop event day.

Please bring a bag lunch for mid-day.

For more info on this class, please call Molly at 510 842 6058 or email her at mollybdenum@gmail.com.

Or Jean Wheeler at Main Street Trees 707-257-2783

The Really Really Free Market is an example of a gift economy, where people freely give what they are able to and are able to freely take what is offered, with no supervision or requirements. It is the last Sunday of every month in Napa. Meet at Vets park at 12pm on Main Street. Give what you can, take what you need!
The Really Really Free Market also isn\’t only about the exchange of goods, but can also be about the exchange of knowledge. At the hosting of the event in Buffalo, someone brought a truck full of old broken bikes, and someone else went home to get their tools and fix them to distribute them to some people in the neighborhood, mostly kids. At one of these events in Portland, Oregon, someone taught a group of people how to weave baskets using grass from the park where the event was held.
Start Time: 12:00
Date: 2009-07-26

Food system analyst, and Napa resident, Joanna Winter has posted online her recent paper titled Comprehensive Planning for the Napa County Food System: A Preliminary Study of Problems and Possibilities. The paper was her final project for her Master of Regional Planning degree at Cornell University.

She chose to analyze the condition of the Napa County’s food system because of the “increasing understanding of the role that the food system plays in health, the environment, social justice and the economy, and the existing lack of holistic planning for this issue.”

In the paper, she shows:

Napa County shares national problems of obesity, lack of food knowledge, food insecurity and contribution to global climate change and other environmental problems.

There are a significant range of advocates and resources for the individual concerns that are affected by the food system.
